Phoenix Rising
Class and Lecture Brochure
PHOENIX RISING is proud to present our current offerings for beaded
Broad, Meroe and Panamanian collars. All classes except the Fringe Elements Class
incorporate the techniques learned into a project necklace. The Fringe Elements Class
will create samples so a wide variety of techniques can be explored.
DESIGN, COLOR and BEAD selection issues will always be addressed. A wide variety of
of my necklaces will be available for examination and are used to illustrate the design
and color portion of the class. General supply lists are available. Kits or "bead needs"
lists are available either from me or this web site.
Specific kit availability is subject to bead availability.
Current lecture offerings are listed on this site.
ALL CLASS MEMBERS receive a handout with stretching exercises and posture "points",
and a routine of stretches is done at the top of each hour.
PRICING IS DONE in two ways: by the student, or by the day. A minimum of 5 students per class
is required. Transportation and board are negotiable.
I am currently teaching 6 classes, ranging in skill from beginner to advanced. The first 3 listings below are for various skill levels of broad collars. The last 3 listings are
special style collars, and include the Meroe and Panamanian collars, plus a Fringe Elements
class. I have 2 additional classes in development: Color Theory and Applied Color Theory.
Beginning Broad Collar Class

|
This class provides an introduction to the two basic broad collar techniques: ladders and
horizontal netting. A simple necklace is constructed using the ladder, netting, picot
edging, and spike fringe. Finishing techniques used include backbars and braiding with
seven. Kits in a variety of colors are available for an additional cost of $30.

A variety of styles besides the one pictured are available for this level of experience.
The class teaches the basic broad collar techniques of ladders, horizontal netting, picot
edging and some style of fringe. It also includes attaching ladders as well as addressing
more complex uses of color and design. Finishing techniques of backbar usage and braiding
with seven are covered. A facility with seed beads and bugles is necessary for anyone
interested in this class. Possible project samples are below, order by name.
Kits for any of these projects
are usually available for an additional fee of $35 to $60.

Meroe Style Broad Collar Class
|
|
This collar is reminiscent of many of the Egyptian collars seen on statuary and in paintings.
I developed this style after viewing a Meroe period exhibit at the Toronto ROM, hence the name.
It features larger beads and less construction time than the bugle and seed bead collars.
The same finishing techniques of backbars/braiding with seven are taught. For an additional
fee of $30 a kit is provided.
Half-day Class, 3 to 4 hours

Fringe Elements Class
Explore the limitless possibilities of fringe embellishment. A sample of each fringe style
will be created that can then be kept with the instructions for future reference. Fringe
styles included are single strand, loop, alternating colors, loop with picot or bugle end,
kinky, interlaced, spike, double layer, and my own 3D and flower power. Variations and
color patterns will also be discussed. Students must supply their own materials. A supply
list is available.
Half-day Class, 3 to 4 hours
Panamanian Collar Class

This optical illusion collar, "chaquieras" is made by the indigenous peoples in Panama.
It is constructed using a variation of vertical netting. The class will construct a collar
similar to the one in the photo. The use of graphing to chart variations and unique
designs will be addressed. Students must supply their own materials. A supply list
is available.
